interview with Nancy Garcia
Hi Jessica, I am a Great Great X 8 Grandchild of Sampson Occum. I am part Brothertown Indian. Although I am a Narragansett by Federal Recognition, I come from 8 of the earliest Sachems first mentioned in American history. I am the Cheif Deputy Historic Preservation Officer for NIT. I am also Chair of the National Algonquian Indian Council. I think I can help with records from tbe Council, so that is the title I will operate under. Let me know what I can do to help. 4014635043 leave name and number if I am not home. Nancy

Ryan Kashanipour paper -- landscape of sin/Spanish control/sickness:
tierra enferma (Spanish control, but sickness) vs tierra negra (no Spanish control, magic, no sickness)
"El Monte/la montaña" -- idealized terminology, the landscape is not mountainous, but it is the description of where people go to escape Spanish control. It becomes the remedy to tierra enferma -- full of health, magic, and idolatry.
** e-mail Ryan Ryan.Kashanipour@nau.edu to ask about theory/framing of the mountain. How powerful is this imagery? Why does it spread? Jon Butler has the terminology "sacralizing the landscape" -- is there a term for the reverse process?**
John Chuchiak -- also wrote about the mountain

Life of John Brainerd
Letter to Eleazer Wheelock:
The best way, according to my humble opinion, to manage with the Indians is to treat them with kindness, and such as shall make them see that we are their real friends and hearty well-wishers; but that we owe them nothing, are under no obligation to show them any special favors, nor (personally considered) expect any thing from them; that what we do is out of pity to them, and from a concern for their good, and that (as God's instruments) they are greatly beholden to us for it; that we do not despise them for their color, but for their heathenish temper and practices; and that when they become Christians, and behave as becomes such, they shall have the same treatment as white people.
Brainerd's time at Bethel/Brotherton: April 1747- May 1755.

Samuel Hopkins/Sarah Osborn
Sarah Osborn -- holds church services in her home, mostly attended by Blacks -- possibly where Joseph Johnson attended in 1770 in Newport? Could have crossed paths with Bristol Yamma and John Quamine, who were being trained to be missionaries in Africa?
Samuel Hopkins -- asked by both the "white and Indian populations" of stockbridge to be their minister after John Sergeant dies, but declines. Note lack of Indian agency -- they are working together with the whites.

Memoirs of Mrs. Sarah L Huntington
Opened a school for the Mohegans in CT in 1830, in Samson Occom's sister's house.
Believes that the Indians are part of the tribe of Israelites.
Asks gov't for additional money for the school but says that more education for the Mohegans would be "no obstacle" if the US decides they need to be removed west.
