tierra enferma (Spanish control, but sickness) vs tierra negra (no Spanish control, magic, no sickness)
"El Monte/la montaña" -- idealized terminology, the landscape is not mountainous, but it is the description of where people go to escape Spanish control. It becomes the remedy to tierra enferma -- full of health, magic, and idolatry.
